Résumé Email: ayca[at]aycaakin[dot]net Design is my tool to affect positive social change, by moving people to action, invoking new feelings, ideas, and perspectives and most of all helping them to become more deliberate actors in their communities. I'm wrapping up my graduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University School of Design's Communication Planning and Information Design program. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Political Science. My experience resides in the realms of political science, environmental science, nonprofit development, and information, communication, and interaction design. My thesis work focuses on designing for activism and making open source technologies more accessible to social change movements. I came to design from a background where I designed communications for social change organizations. Because I lacked the means in my profession to formulate and critically evaluate sustainable design strategies, I went back to graduate school to work on exactly that. Human beings are visual creatures, driven by situational information. Through the emphasis of relationships between different representational media, design remains my strategy for helping people solve social problems in compelling ways. |
